The University of Makeni began its operations as Fatima Institute in September 2005 with the aim of breeding young people through the ranks of profound orientation on religion, social development and academic proficiency. In 2009 Fatima Institute was accredited a university status, and became the first private university in Sierra Leone. Since date to now its has gained a sterling status among universities in Sierra Leone and its sub-regions.This they have resoundingly achieved over the years by enforcing stringent measures against malpractice, cultism and lecturers' inconsistent adherence to lectures.
The University is located in the city of Makeni, Bombali District of the Northern Province of Sierra Leone, West Africa.
As part of the continuing development of the university a second constituent college known as St. Joseph’s College of Management and ICT was established in 2010 in the nearby village of Yoni.
Bishop Natale Paganelli, Chancellor of the University of Makeni. Pro. Alimamy Joseph Turay is the University's vice chancellor. He is entrusted with the responsibility of running the academic affairs of the university.
